The course fee is only part of the picture. This guide explains what is already included when you study with us, and what you should plan to pay for yourself while you are here.
Your course fee pays for your lessons, your placement test, course materials for the period you study, and the school's facilities — classrooms, library, gardens, self-study areas and wi-fi. It also covers your certificate at the end.
Because Loxdale is a registered educational charity rather than a commercial business, fees exist to run the school well rather than to produce a profit.
Most adult students stay with a host family. Homestay prices include your room and a meal plan, so a large part of your weekly food cost is already paid before you arrive. Half board, for example, means breakfast and an evening meal every day, with lunch at the weekend.
If you choose a room without meals, budget for your own food shopping and lunches. Supermarkets in Portslade and Hove are the cheapest option; buying lunch out every day is the fastest way to spend more than you planned.

There is a bus stop directly outside the school, and most host families are on a bus route. If you travel by bus every day, a weekly or monthly pass is far better value than single tickets — ask the driver or check the bus company's app.
Young learners on our summer and winter programmes receive a bus pass as part of the package, so there is nothing extra to pay for daily travel.
A UK pay-as-you-go SIM card is inexpensive and available from any supermarket or phone shop; you do not need a contract or a UK bank account to buy one. Many students simply use an eSIM from home instead.
Contactless bank cards from most countries work everywhere here, including on trains and buses, so opening a UK bank account is usually unnecessary for a short stay.
Airport transfers, travel insurance, visa costs where they apply, and spending money for weekends are the four items students most often leave out of their budget. Our transfers and insurance can be added to your booking, so they appear in your quote rather than as a surprise later.
If you are coming for several months, also think about the seasons. Brighton is mild but wet and windy in winter, and a proper coat bought at home is cheaper than one bought here in a hurry.
