What has happened (checked 29 September 2026)

On 14 September 2026 English UK announced that it had activated its Student Emergency Support scheme for students affected by the closure of EC English's four UK schools, in London, Cambridge, Brighton and Manchester. English UK said it expected to support around 370 students to finish their courses at other member centres at no extra cost, and that affected students would receive an email from English UK asking for the details it needs.

    Read English UK's announcement

Step 1: Check your email and reply to English UK

If you were enrolled at an affected school, English UK is contacting students directly. It is coordinating replacement places centrally, so that students are matched fairly and in an orderly way. The most important thing you can do is reply to that email with the information it asks for.

If you have not had an email, check your spam folder, then contact English UK through its website. Agents and parents can also ask English UK about a student's situation.

    • Reply to the English UK email as soon as you can
    • Check spam or junk folders
    • Keep the email address you booked with active
    • Agents: contact English UK about students you placed

Step 2: Keep your paperwork together

Whatever happens next, you will need proof of what you booked and paid. Save everything in one place, on your phone and in a folder.

    • Booking confirmation and invoices
    • Receipts or bank statements showing payments
    • Your visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation, if you have one
    • Accommodation booking and host family details
    • Flight and airport transfer bookings
    • Emails and messages from the school

Step 3: If you would like to study with us

Loxdale English Centre is an independent, not-for-profit English school in Portslade, part of Brighton and Hove. We are accredited by Accreditation UK, classes have a maximum of 14 adults, and the train into central Brighton takes around ten minutes.

Tell us your level, your dates and what happened, and we will tell you honestly what is available. You can call us on +44 (0) 1273414973, message us on WhatsApp, or use the contact form. We can also help with homestay with a host family and with arranging your airport transfer.

If you are eligible for English UK's scheme, it is worth waiting to hear what they can arrange before paying for a new course.

For parents and agents: what to ask any school

Whichever school you choose next, these questions help you make a safe decision, especially for students under 18.

    • Is the school accredited by Accreditation UK, and can you check it on the official list?
    • Does the school take part in Student Emergency Support?
    • How is welfare handled, and who is the named safeguarding lead?
    • Is accommodation checked, and are adult household members DBS-checked?
    • Who will answer the phone if something goes wrong?
    • How long has the school been operating, and who owns it?

    Frequently asked questions

My school in Brighton has closed. What should I do first?
Check your email for a message from English UK and reply with the information it asks for. Keep all your booking and payment records. If you would like to talk through your options, contact us and we will explain what we can offer.
Will I get my money back?
We cannot speak for another school. English UK says that through its Student Emergency Support scheme it expects eligible students to be able to complete their courses at other member centres at no extra cost. For anything about refunds or payments to the closed school, contact English UK and keep your receipts.
Can I continue my course at Loxdale?
Possibly. Contact us with your level, the dates you need and what you had booked, and we will tell you honestly what is available. If you are eligible for English UK's scheme, they coordinate placements, so check with them as well.
I am a parent or agent. Who can I talk to?
Call +44 (0) 1273414973 or message us on WhatsApp on +44 7775 928235. For students under 18, we will talk through welfare, accommodation and supervision before anything is booked.
What about the students of Interactive English Language School in Hove?
That school closed suddenly in September 2025. English UK placed its students at other member centres in the city at the time, and thanked Loxdale, along with two other Brighton schools, for helping. If you are still looking for a school in Brighton and Hove, you are welcome to contact us.
How can I check that a school is safe to book?
Look for Accreditation UK, which is run by the British Council and English UK, and check the school's name on the official list. Ask whether it takes part in Student Emergency Support, and ask who owns the school and how welfare is managed.
