Summer English Course for Teenagers
Our popular Summer Young Learner course is designed for teenagers aged 13 to 17. We teach and inspire students from around the world to learn English whilst discovering British culture and traditions through interactive, enjoyable lessons. Have questions? See our Young Learner FAQ.
Our goal is to build your confidence in speaking English and help you achieve your potential across all language skills. Loxdale English Centre provides the perfect setting—a safe residential area in Brighton, within easy reach of the city centre, the countryside, and supervised beach visits. Read more about our welfare and safeguarding policies.
English Lessons
On their first day, students complete a placement test and interview so we can assign them to the correct level class. We continuously monitor progress, with a revision session every Monday.
Our timetable alternates weekly: one week features morning lessons with afternoon activities, the next reverses this schedule. This variety keeps students engaged throughout their stay.
At Loxdale, we teach General English alongside British culture, traditions, and history—providing interesting and varied tuition. Our international classroom environment means students speak English both in and out of lessons, making friends from around the world.
Communication
Task-based learning and communicative activities give learners practice expressing themselves solely in English.
Culture
We help students develop intercultural understanding through lessons on British traditions and history.
Confidence
We work hard to increase each student's confidence and motivation with communicating in English.
Critical Thinking
Our teachers encourage students to question, think for themselves, and use judgement with creativity.
Student Welfare
Many teenagers study with us independently, and parents trust us because we prioritise their children's welfare. We take registers regularly to ensure everyone is in the right place, and all activities and excursions are supervised by our staff.
Independent students meet with dedicated staff three times weekly to ensure they're settling in, making friends, and understanding their timetable.
24/7 Support Network
All students receive contact numbers for:
- • The Principal's direct line
- • School emergency phone
- • Accommodation & Welfare Officers' mobiles
We support your child every step of the way.
Free Time & Evening Routine
Teenagers benefit from some free time to decompress and socialise with their new friends. We believe this carefully supervised independence helps build confidence and life skills. Students always know where to find staff, and our welfare team is available around the clock.
Stay at School
Continue using school facilities including the sports hall, garden, computer room, and social areas.
Return to Accommodation
Go home to their host family or the residential common room.
Supervised Off-Site Time
With parental permission and in groups of 3+, explore Portslade, Hove, or Brighton centres. Beach and solo trips are not permitted.
Evening Schedule
6pm: All students return for dinner, followed by evening social activities.
After activities finish: Students living more than a 15-minute walk from school are taken home by minibus or taxi.
Walking distance: Students within 15 minutes walk home. Host families are informed of expected arrival times.
Important: No student may go out after evening activities finish.
