Surviving a Long Haul Flight
Coming to study English at Loxdale from far away? Here are our top tips for surviving a long-distance plane journey and arriving ready to learn!
The Seat
The first battle in surviving any long haul flight is the seat. Choose wisely and you're halfway to having a great flight!
Window seats are perfect if you want to sleep or work uninterrupted. You won't need to get up for other passengers.
Aisle seats are ideal if you need regular bathroom breaks — no guilt about disturbing others!
Exit row seats cost a bit more but offer precious extra legroom for taller passengers.
The Upgrade
If you can afford to upgrade even one way, DO IT! More legroom, wider seats, and less feeling like a sardine. You can always ask politely at check-in for a free upgrade — the worst they can say is no.
Snacks
There are few things worse than getting hangry at 35,000 feet! Pack a trail mix of nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate. These snacks: - Keep you occupied until the meal service - Tide you over if you don't like the in-flight food - Take up minimal space in your carry-on
Pro tip: If flying budget, check if meals are included. Airport food is expensive but cheaper than in-flight purchases!
The Bathroom
Nobody loves airplane bathrooms, but here's how to make them bearable: - Avoid busy times — just after meals or before landing - Bring wet wipes to clean surfaces - A small body mist or air freshener works wonders - Leave it tidy for the next person!
Dress Code
Always dress comfortably. This is not the time for: - Restrictive clothing - Heavy jewellery - High heels - Skinny jeans
Light layers are perfect — cabin temperatures vary between too hot and freezing cold.
Hydration
Drink water, water, and more water. It's tempting to enjoy free alcohol (depending on your airline), but this leaves you feeling sick, tired, and jet-lagged.
Even tea, coffee, and fizzy drinks aren't ideal — the caffeine and sugar won't help. Every time I drink plenty of water on flights, I arrive feeling fresh, well-rested, and with zero jet lag.
Sleep Aids
Long haul flights make sleep difficult. Consider packing: - Eye mask - Neck pillow - Earplugs
Important: If using supplements or prescription sleep aids, test them at home first! Some people react unexpectedly to these medications.
Entertainment
Never rely solely on in-flight entertainment — screens break! Always bring: - Loaded phone/tablet with shows and games - E-reader with books downloaded - Something to keep you occupied
