Whether you want to study English for your job, holidays, learn about British culture or generally to improve your confidence in English, Loxdale’s has a course for you. For over 15 years we have been offering short, cost effective courses especially for students who are aged 40+. You will be able to learn new skills and enhance your appreciation of the English language and culture in the company of like-minded people on both courses. On our courses you will enjoy a lively programme of lessons, lectures and cultural visits which are designed to ensure you get the most enriching study experience during your time at Loxdale. You will have up to 16 English level- tested lessons per week.
You will also have at least 10 classes which are only for the students aged 40 +. It’s a wonderful opportunity to gain confidence and strengthen your language skills by practising everyday English in a relaxed and friendly environment. We recognise that some students are interested in improving their English in a more academic environment, whilst others want to learn more about British Culture and British life. At Loxdale you can choose from two tailor made courses which are available to students of all levels, from pre-intermediate to proficiency.
We recognise that some students are interested in improving their English level, whilst others want to learn more about British Culture and British life. For this reason, you can choose from two tailor made 40+ courses which are available to students of all levels, from pre-intermediate to proficiency: 40+ General English Course and 40+ British Culture. See below for the course descriptions and sample programmes.
This course is for our more mature students who want to work more on their English skills with a little British culture too. Students can study for 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks. Students will be tested and put into the appropriate English class, sometimes together with our other younger students. You will have 16 English level-tested lessons per week.
You will also have 10 classes which are only for the students aged 40+. These focus more on topics such as British art, history, politics, gardens etc. There are also optional cultural visits to places of interest.
This gives you the benefit of working at your own English level but still gives you time to spend with students of your age who are interested in British culture and life.
Our cultural course is a lively programme of lectures, lessons and educational visits. It is open to mature students who have at least a pre-intermediate level of English and you can choose to study for either 1 or 2 weeks.
Originally this course developed in response to some of our students who have been returning to Loxdale each year for more than 10 times. They still wanted to continue coming but didn’t want a language based course. So this 40+ course is for those who want to learn more about different aspects of British Culture and history. Lectures and lessons vary with each group of students but past subjects have included homelessness, Shakespeare, the National Health system, British history, geography, British scientists, gardening and many more.
We encourage our students to visit cultural places of interest in this area as well as those in the centre of Brighton. You can get the most fantastic views of the whole area by visiting one of only 2 remaining Camera Obscuras at Foredown Tower, only a 14 minute walk from our language school. Or visit the second oldest church in Brighton & Hove, St. Nicholas followed by a cream tea at the local garden centre or a rummage through the charity shop at Emmaus, all within a 10 minute walk from school.
