Whether you want to study English for your job, holidays, learn about British culture, or generally improve your confidence in English, Loxdale’s has a course for you. For over 15 years, we have been offering short, cost-effective courses especially for students aged 40+. You will be able to learn new skills and enhance your appreciation of the English language and culture in the company of like-minded people on both courses. On our courses, you will enjoy a lively program of lessons, lectures, and cultural visits designed to ensure you get the most enriching study experience during your time at Loxdale. You will have up to 16 English level-tested lessons per week.
You will also have at least 10 classes exclusively for students aged 40+. It’s a wonderful opportunity to gain confidence and strengthen your language skills by practicing everyday English in a relaxed and friendly environment. We recognize that some students are interested in improving their English in a more academic environment, while others want to learn more about British culture and British life. At Loxdale, you can choose from two tailor-made courses available to students of all levels, from pre-intermediate to proficiency.
We recognize that some students are interested in improving their English level, while others want to learn more about British culture and British life. For this reason, you can choose from two tailor-made 40+ courses available to students of all levels, from pre-intermediate to proficiency: 40+ General English Course and 40+ British Culture. See below for the course descriptions and sample programs.
This course is for mature students who want to work on their English skills with a little British culture too. Students can study for 1, 2, 3, or 4 weeks. Students will be tested and placed in the appropriate English class, sometimes together with younger students. You will have 16 English level-tested lessons per week.
You will also have 10 classes exclusively for students aged 40+. These focus on topics such as British art, history, politics, gardens, etc. There are also optional cultural visits to places of interest.
This gives you the benefit of working at your own English level but still allows you time to spend with students your age who are interested in British culture and life.
Our cultural course is a lively program of lectures, lessons, and educational visits. It is open to mature students who have at least a pre-intermediate level of English and can study for either 1 or 2 weeks.
This course developed in response to some of our students who have returned to Loxdale for more than 10 times. They still wanted to continue coming but didn’t want a language-based course. So, this 40+ course is for those who want to learn more about different aspects of British culture and history. Lectures and lessons vary with each group of students, but past subjects have included homelessness, Shakespeare, the National Health System, British history, geography, British scientists, gardening, and many more.
We encourage our students to visit cultural places of interest in this area as well as those in the center of Brighton. You can get fantastic views of the entire area by visiting one of only two remaining Camera Obscuras at Foredown Tower, only a 14-minute walk from our language school. Or visit the second oldest church in Brighton & Hove, St. Nicholas, followed by a cream tea at the local garden center or a rummage through the charity shop at Emmaus, all within a 10-minute walk from the school.
