Social Life

An exciting social and cultural calendar … it’s not all work

At Loxdale we offer our students a fantastic social programme. We make sure you have every opportunity to socialise with your fellow students and enjoy a wonderful social life. You will even get to know the teaching staff outside the classroom environment sometimes.

On-site facilities

Out of the summer, the School facilities are open for you to use Mondays to Fridays until around 5pm.  It is sometimes available in the evenings too as you will see from the sample social programme. We also encourage our students also join local sports teams, clubs, societies, or choirs.

*This facility is not available for adults during the summer.

Afternoon activities

Throughout the year, we offer a good selection of activities as part of our school social programme. Our Social Manager organises a programme with lots of variety so there is something for everyone to take part in and enjoy. These include a range of sports activities, visits to local places of interest, conversation sessions, art and crafts, baking, team building games, barbecues and many more. The afternoon trips that we put on include Beachy Head, Lewes, Devil’s Dyke and Rottingdean where you can enjoy a traditional English cream tea.  Our adult students have lots of input into their social programme and each month, we ask for their suggestions and ideas of new things for them to enjoy. Many of these activities are free but may cost between £1 and £15.

Evening activities

Each week there are at least two evening activities organised in conjunction with the School staff. These may include games evenings, barbecues, sports activities, class events, film nights, quizzes, wine and cheese evenings, traditional English barn dances, pub evenings and many more.

Many of these activities are free but may in some cases be charged £1 – £15.

Weekend Trips

At Loxdale we normally offer our students the opportunity of going on at least two weekend trips each month. Some are free and others cost between £10 and £55. Throughout the year we also offer additional trips which are more expensive, these include trips to Scotland, West Country, Paris, the Warner Bros. – Harry Potter Studio Tour and Thorpe Park.

Some of the other destinations that you might be able to visit include a local village, Chichester, Chartwell (home of Sir Winston Churchill), Salisbury and the New Forest, Stonehenge, Hastings, Portsmouth, Cambridge, Oxford, Bath, Lewes and many more towns and cities in the area.

Of course, we also have regular trips to London (only an hour from Loxdale).  Amongst the various options, students get the opportunity to visit The British MuseumThe National GalleryThe Tate BritainThe Tate ModernThe Natural History Museum and The Science Museum.

Students studying for a whole term visit London on a cultural visit as part of their course fee.  In the morning, students visit the Natural History Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum or the Science Museum.  In the afternoon they might go on a South Bank tour, visit the Imperial War Museum or the National Portrait Gallery.

Most of the trips are organised by Loxdale and one of our staff travel with you on the trip to give you some information.  If there isn’t a school trip on one weekend, we also work with a great, local tour company who can offer even more tours for you e.g. Isle of Wight, Paris, Brussels and more.

The Local Community

Brighton & Hove is a wonderfully busy city offering a wide range of activities.  Whether you are looking for comedy, a debate club, sport clubs, dance lessons/clubs, music opportunities, poetry, a choir, a book club, you will probably find it here.  For long staying students, we highly recommend that you take the opportunity to join some of the clubs, teams and societies to meet more local people, enjoy one of your interests and to practise your English in a natural setting.

We are lucky to have a fantastic variety of facilities for our students to enjoy outside of their classes.  We have a sport hall on site which is open for students to use in the afternoons.  Here you can enjoy playing badminton, volleyball, table tennis, basketball, indoor hockey, Benchball, dodgeball and indoor football.

We also have a comfortable Common Room which is available in the afternoons.  Here you can play board games, card games, watch TV or films, use the computers or just relax and chat with your friends.

We also have a self-study room and library which you can use in your free time. Here you can do your homework, research, enjoy reading a book or article or use the computers.

Also available most afternoons and some evenings is our selection of musical instruments.  We have several pianos, guitars and percussion instruments for students to enjoy.  We love hearing music throughout the school in the breaks and after school.

On top of all this, we have a large garden for you to use and enjoy watching the squirrels and birds in the trees surrounding the garden.  We have a badminton and a volleyball area, and football goals too.  For those who just want to sit and chat with your friends or enjoy the sunshine, you can relax by sitting on the lawn or at one of our many picnic tables.

  • Please note that there is restricted use of these for adults during the summer period.
