We recommend that prospective students take our on-line English test before they enrol to ensure that we have a course suitable for their level of English. Some courses require a minimum level of English in order to participate.

All students have an English test and an interview on their first day to establish their level of English so that they can be placed in the appropriate level class.

Each student is allocated a tutor whom they can turn to for help and guidance. They will also regularly look at your progress and evaluate your learning.

Students are expected to buy a course book for their English studies.

At the end of the course all students receive a certificate showing the number of hours they have studied and the level they have achieved.

Description

Students can choose to attend just the General English course in the mornings but they have the option of attending afternoon ’Workshop’ sessions as well, to make the course more intensive. Students should all expect to receive at least 45 minutes homework each day.

Morning General English

The morning courses focus on all 5 traditional language skills; reading, writing, listening, pronunciation and speaking.  These lessons are designed to help you hear, understand and express yourself more completely and with greater confidence in social situations.

We find that by providing different forms of learning methods (lectures, classes and tutorials) students are able to learn efficiently and keep their motivation high.  It also enables students to learn not only English language but about English culture and life, making their stay in England more beneficial and effective.

The courses are designed not only to improve the student’s English level but also their confidence.  Students therefore have a minimum of 18 sessions of 40 minutes on their English studies.  This equates to 12 clock hours per week.

During the morning General English sessions students will experience the following methods of study at Loxdale English Centre:

Lessons

All students are tested and interviewed in order that they are placed into the correct level class.

Lectures

Students have one lecture or study visit a week on various aspects of British life.  Lectures have included ’Homelessness’, ’Britain & the world’, ’Things to do in London’, ’101 interesting things about British history’, ’HIV and the Terence Higgins Trust’, ’The English Court System’, ’Photographic portraiture’, ’British food’, ’British songs’, ’Presentation techniques’ and ’Employers expectations of employees’.

Skills Sessions

Students do extra work around different skills.  Students have chosen from some of the following skills:  Singing in English, What’s to Read, Talking Activities, Lyrics, Shakespeare shorts, Drama and Creative Writing.  There are a maximum of 15 spaces for each class.

Britain Today

Students will have 2 lessons or lectures per week on various aspects of Britain Today including the welfare, educational, political and judicial systems.

Optional - Afternoon Intensive Course Workshops

In the afternoons students have the option of doing further work in certain areas of English language in order to get some more intensive help in the areas they need. The workshops take place once a week for one hour 20 minutes.  Students are not necessarily split into different levels for these sessions. These Workshops include:

Fluency and Vocabulary

We work to help you expand your vocabulary and practise to achieve greater fluency and listening capacity.  We will also provide you with knowledge of the most useful colloquial expressions, essential for everyday life.

Grammar

We work to help consolidate the grammatical base you have and increase your knowledge and use of grammar.

Reading and Writing

Students will expand their knowledge of literature and will work on creative writing.

Cambridge Exam Practice

Students have the opportunity of taking exam papers for the Cambridge FCE and Cambridge CAE certificates and to practice for them before taking the actual exams.

note: A minimum of 7 students is needed for each workshop to run.
