Swedish Folk High School - background

The Swedish Folk High School provides educationally high quality courses as well as being a modern learning centre with an up-to-date approach to the process of learning. The atmosphere is informal, friendly and professional, and there are great opportunities to make new friends and discover new interests during your stay.

Founded in 1968 as a school for adults, the Swedish Folk High School moved to its present location at The Loxdale English Centre in 1980, when it became established as a charitable education foundation. The school is housed in a beautiful Victorian mansion set in its own grounds of over 11,000 square metres. It combines traditional period architecture with modern, purpose-built classrooms and also has its own conference, sports and dining facilities.

Swedish Folk High School language teachers have a minimum of 6 years experience in the teaching of English as a foreign language.

High standards in teaching English

Since it was founded in 1968, the Loxdale English Centre has delivered over 7,000 educational programmes. Our language teachers have a minimum of 6 years’ experience teaching English as a foreign language. The school is accredited by the British Council.

Putting you first

It isn’t just our high academic standards that set us apart. When you arrive, you will be allocated a personal tutor who will be there to support and guide you throughout your studies. We’re committed to providing a stimulating learning environment based on co-operation and active participation that will empower students of all ages and social backgrounds to reach their full potential.

We actively encourage critical study and collaborative enquiry, while nurturing tolerance and respect for all people, cultures and ideas. Join the majority of our students who live with our specially selected and monitored home stay families; alternatively you may choose to stay in a recommended hotel or guest house. The school also has a dining area and kitchen which provides fresh, wholesome food (including vegetarian) each day.

Great location

Housed in a beautiful Victorian mansion set in peaceful wooded grounds, the Loxdale English Centre is just three kilometres from central Brighton, one of Britain’s most exciting and culturally diverse cities. Visit the fantastical seaside palace, the Royal Pavilion, with its Indian domes and minarets and Chinese style interior; stroll the world-famous beachfront and boardwalk with its bohemian Artists’ Quarter and numerous clubs, bars and music venues, or simply spend your days visiting the city’s many galleries and museums. Whatever your tastes, Brighton is certain to keep you enthralled.

An exciting social and cultural calendar

It’s not all work! We make sure you have every opportunity to socialise with your fellow students. You’ll also get to know the teaching staff outside of the classroom environment. The Loxdale social calendar lasts throughout the year. Our varied programme of activities includes cultural excursions salsa lessons, games evenings, films, barbecues, sports activities, quizzes, cooking and much more. So let your hair down and have fun!
